The largest congress for Trichologists, hair and hair loss specialists in the UK was held at the at the Museum of Science and Industry, in Manchester on 21st – 22nd April 2018.

Following its successful first year, this 2-day International Trichology Congress was held in the prestigious Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Here, our very own Liam Byrne talks us through the day;

“We were treated to a wide range of talks, workshops, panel discussions, expert tables, incorporating all aspects of Trichology and hair biology.  The highlights of Saturday for me were talks from Dr. Julie Thornton from Bradford University and Mr. Kambiz Golchin from the Beacon Face and Dermatology, Beacon Clinic in Dublin.

Dr. Thornton gave fascinating insight into the effects of ageing on our hormone levels and the implications for our hair and hair density, particularly for women’s hair post the menopause.

Mr. Golchin gave a talk on Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, which is the hot topic in hair loss treatments at the moment.  He gave a really informative talk based on his 10 years of experience using PRP. His talk went down really well, given the queue of delegates lined up to ask him questions afterwards.

First up on Sunday was Dr. Hugh Rushton, talking about the increasing use of hair toxicology in legal cases. Dr. Paul Farrant, Consultant Dermatologist spoke on post finasteride syndrome.

Finasteride is a very effective medication in controlling male pattern hair loss in men, particularly if started in time, however recently there has been a lot of discussion about possible side effects.  Dr. Farrant gave a great insight into the condition and there was a lot of questions and discussion afterwards.

We were also treated to two talks from guests from South America which went down very well.  This was a feature of this years congress with delegates attending from many countries including Ireland, South America, Dubai, Turkey and Singapore.

I’m really looking forward to 2019’s congress, as hair never ceases to fascinate me and its great to be able to indulge my passion with like minded people.”  Liam Byrne.
